How to Rotate a PDF (Fixing Sideways Scans)

It happens to almost everyone who scans documents: the page feeds in the wrong way, and the resulting PDF has one or more pages sideways or completely upside down. Rotating fixes this without needing to re-scan anything.

90°, 180°, or 270° — which one do you need?

  • 90° or 270° — for a page that's sideways (text runs top-to-bottom instead of left-to-right).
  • 180° — for a page that's fully upside down.

If you're not sure which direction, just try one — if it makes things worse instead of better, you'll immediately know to try the other direction instead.

Rotating just one page vs. the whole document

It's common for only one or two pages in an otherwise-correct scan to come out sideways (usually because a page was fed into the scanner differently from the rest). A good rotate tool lets you target specific page numbers instead of rotating everything, so you don't accidentally flip pages that were already correct.

How to do it

  1. Upload the PDF — the page count is detected so you know what you're working with.
  2. Specify which pages need rotating — all of them, or just the specific ones that are off.
  3. Pick the rotation angle and download the corrected file.

Our Rotate PDF tool handles both cases — rotate everything at once, or target just the pages that need it, entirely in your browser.

Why scanned PDFs get rotated

Scanners and phone apps can save pages according to how they were captured rather than how they should be read. A multi-page document can therefore contain one sideways page between otherwise normal portrait pages.

Rotate only what needs fixing

When a document has mixed orientation, rotating every page can create a new problem. Preview page thumbnails and correct only the pages that are sideways or upside down.

Rotation is not deskewing

Rotating a page by 90 degrees is different from straightening a scan that is tilted by a few degrees. If text lines are diagonally skewed, the document needs a deskew workflow rather than a simple quarter-turn.

Check the final document

After rotation, quickly flip through the exported PDF. This catches pages that were accidentally rotated twice and confirms that portrait and landscape pages still make sense together.
